MPD, Inc. is an employee-owned company with a heritage that stretches back to 1899.
Originally established in Owensboro, Kentucky, its predecessor companies produced electrical
machinery, electric lamps, and electron tubes on the same site where MPD, Inc. operates today.
In 1945, General Electric acquired the business and expanded its operations by relocating new
product lines from other U.S. locations. This growth introduced advanced manufacturing
capabilities, including ceramic seal assemblies, planar tubes, vidicon tubes, and microwave
transmitters and receivers.
In 1987, General Electric sold the Owensboro business to private investors who renamed it
MPD, Inc. At that time, the company primarily produced electronic components for military
avionics, which made up 85% of total sales. To expand into new markets, MPD, Inc. began
acquiring complementary businesses. These included MPH Industries and CMI in 1988, Lion
Laboratories Limited in Wales in 1990, and Kustom Signals in 2014.
In 1997, following a decade of private ownership, MPD, Inc. became a 100% employee-owned
company through the formation of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). This structure
gave employees a direct stake in the company’s long-term performance.
Today, MPD, Inc. oversees a diverse portfolio of companies that develop technology and
products for law enforcement, public safety, military, industrial applications, and many more.
As owners, employees not only benefit from competitive compensation but also actively
participate in the company’s financial success and continued growth.
